Tommy’s New Wheels!

We never had a walker for Maggie—I am pretty sure she just went from hanging out in the swing to crawling.  Finding somewhere to put Tommy so we can help Maggie with things and play with her can be challenging at times—like when we are out in front of the garage riding bike or giving Maggie a bath, etc.  My friend from work, Patty, suggested a walker and she had one from her grandkids that was no longer needed.  Tommy gets around pretty good, always tries to get as close to the tub as he can when Maggie is taking a bath.  Thanks Patty!

So happy now that he is mobile!

Look at those thighs!

Tommy Gets New Ears!

It is hard to remember what Tommy was like mood-wise prior to 4 months.  At 4 months he got his first double ear infection.  This first ear infection turned into about 6 other ear infections or one giant, never ending one—either way he was miserable.  So miserable that he was making all of us feel the same way.  I started to believe my baby had colic or something, no one could believe he was that mad all the time.  One doctor believed  he was constipated and put him on prunes—that solved one problem but didn’t improve his mood.  :)  You literally could not set him down.  He had to sleep upright on top of me.  We had all 3 different antibiotics at least 2-3 times each and the ear numbing drops.  Our family doctor finally recommended we see the ENT.  We saw him in the middle of March.  Tommy’s ear infection had just started to clear so with spring right around the corner he recommended we wait it out a little longer.  So we did nothing.  Two weeks later another ear infection.  Finally we called and scheduled the surgery.  Tommy had tube surgery on 4/17/13.  Both mommies were very nervous.  Susie went back with him and I waited nervously in the waiting room.  Everyone told us that by that night or the next day we would have a brand new baby that would magically be in a good mood and sleep through the night.  We didn’t get that brand new baby.  The surgery was successful but he still had an ear infection that just wouldn’t clear.  He seemed to be better for a couple days and then have a few bad days.  We let this drag on for 6 weeks until our follow up with the ENT.  He was shocked that his ear was still draining green pus and quickly prescribed turbo ear drops.  These ones were 10 times more expensive but after 7 days on those we finally have  our “new baby”.  His mood and personality is like night and day.  He is happy and smiling all the time now.  So happy it makes me feel guilty not doing something sooner.

Swimming Lessons!

Maggie had her first “real” swimming lessons in April.  She had done the Mommy and Me one with Susie as a 1 year old but this was her first session in the water with a the teacher and mommies sitting comfortably in their clothes in the bleachers.  We were curious to see how she would do and she did great.  She was a good listener and tried everything.  She hasn’t liked getting her face splashed since she was an infant so the first couple of classes she didn’t want to do the “bobs” and wouldn’t go under during Ring Around The Rosie.  By the end of the session she was a pro at going under and it actually became her favorite part of class.  I am so proud of her.  She now jumps of the edge of the pool or the dock at the lake and goes under!  Such a big girl!

Maggie’s First Haircut

Sometime in April Maggie got her first haircut, she was 3 years and 4 months old.  I was a little apprehensive to cut it, it had taken 3 years to get it to fit in a ponytail, but it was getting pretty long and developing some pretty bad tangles--so we decided to just get a trim.  Maggie was really excited about it until we got there and then she kind of froze.  She didn’t cry but had to hold my hand for the first half of the appointment.  By the end when the stylist offered to braid and put “sparkles” in her hair they were best friends.  Now she keeps asking for another haircut.  I think it made her feel like a really big girl.

Easter Outfits

Maggie is getting really independent/bossy/picky about her clothes. So when we were shopping for a Easter dress she was very adamant about picking out her own dress. The first one she picked out was almost florescent pink/orange and very puffy. Susie and I hated it but Maggie loved it. A minor meltdown ensued so we ended up buying it. A few days later I stumbled across a similar but less bold dress at Target and we switched them out on her—evil, I know. She loved it though and felt beautiful in the dress “she had picked out”. Tommy’s outfit was cousin Luca’s Easter outfit from the year before.

Easter Baskets Round #2

Maggie was so excited for the Easter bunny to come this year.  I think it was the first year she really understood what it meant—or at least understood that it meant getting little presents and candy.  So it was fun to wake up and see the excitement in Maggie’s eyes as she ran to the living room to find her basket.  I think Tommy’s basket was bigger than him.  Tommy received lots of puffs, boy sippy cups, and new pajamas.  Maggie’s had lots of candy, Hello Kitty items (necklaces, bracelets, note pads, etc.), a kite, Wreck It Ralph, and a new doodle pro.

Tommy is thankful to have boy cups

Over the course of a month Maggie ate almost everything in her basket except for the Cadburry Creme Eggs--turns out the inside "disgusts" her--good thing they are mommy's favorite

Just woke up, running for her basket

She also got a jump rope

She was probably most excited about the Dora kite which turned out to be the biggest bust--it doesn't fly more than 5' off of the ground.  She had fun trying though.

Dying Eggs!

This year I saw something on Facebook about baking the eggs in the oven vs. boiling them so we decided to try it.  They turned out good but for some reason they seemed a little creepy to me.  Maggie ate quite a few of them but Susie and I didn’t.  Maggie was much more into dying them this year, she wanted them all to have lots of colors.

Easter Baskets Round #1

My friend Jason, from work, loves to get the kids Easter baskets and really goes all out.  This years was so good in fact, Susie and I contemplated saving them until Easter morning and skipping our baskets.  Maggie’s was filled with a ton of candy, Dora and Hello Kitty coloring books, crayons,  princess bubbles, a PEZ dispenser, giant chocolate bunny, and much more.  Tommy’s was equally as good complete with two trucks, balls, rubber ducky, and books.  He and Maggie both really enjoy the dump truck and loader—Maggie likes to push them down the hallway and Tommy loves to chew on them.   Thanks Jason!

Goodbye Gakas (Nuks)!

Old habits die hard.  Yes, our almost 3.5 year old still loved her gakas at naptime and bedtime.  We have been talking about taking them away for the last 1.5 years but we could always find a convenient excuse i.e. we have a really long road trip to Missouri coming up, we will want them for the plane ride to Florida, etc.  For some reason Susie and I had it in our heads that it would be a nightmare to get her to sleep without them and that the whole weekend would be a horrible mix of crying and whining—what we got was quite the opposite.  We told her she needed to bag them up and put them in the mailbox and the Gaka Fairy would come pick them up and bring them to other babies that needed them and in return she would leave a present for Maggie in the mailbox--for being such a big girl.  The first night was easy, she was so excited to leave them in the mailbox for the Fairy.  The second night when it got to be bedtime she asked for one back.—we stayed strong and by the 3rd or 4th night she had forgotten about them completely and never asked for them again.  Now she always says “Only Tommy takes gakas, gakas are for babies”.

Gakas all bagged up, ready for the mailbox!

The best part is that Susie and I forgot to take them out of the mailbox and hide them in the house—so not sure what the mailman thought when he opened up the mailbox and found a bag of gakas.  Then when we finally did  remember to grab them,  we stashed them in the console of the car—while in Missouri, Maggie is climbing around in the car digging through everything while we were waiting for Susie, who was shopping, and Maggie finds the bag of gakas and asks why the Fairy put them in our car…. :)
